I entered the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Aix-en-Provence with the intention of obtaining a solid ‘métier’ as an architectural draughtswoman. It is no wonder, however, that after three years spent in this sun-drenched home of Cézanne, I turned away from technical drawing to become a painter.
My influences are many and varied but time spent living in Japan and journeys within Europe, Asia and South Africa have been particularly inspirational.
Whatever the initial inspiration for a painting, however, the medium is not so easily just applied and controlled but has to be cajoled and negotiated with in order to achieve the desired effects. Thus objective subject matter sometimes tends to evolve and take on a totally different life of its own beyond the initial intention. This can be exacting but it is all part of the excitement and challenge of painting.
