THE  ETHIOPIANS

The Ethiopians

30 x 30cm.  Oil and acrylic on canvas.  2004.

‘The Ethiopians’ were inspired by a panoramic newspaper image of hundreds of people gathered on barren plains during the famine of 1984.  I examined this photo with a magnifying glass and discovered that in spite of the desperation of the situation, within the mass of people, the majority were made up of small clusters, presumably families, in which people chattered, children were amused and people smiled.  The detail of life goes on to the best of our abilities whatever the situation.  As an artist I wanted to celebrate the positive and praise the dignity of these people against all odds.
