No 1:  Mozambiquan Dhow:  One cold grey day in London recently I was flipping through a magazine when a tiny photo (no more than 7x7cm) caught my eye.  It was of a Mozambiquan dhow sailing through turquoise waters.  My mind’s eye was sucked into that scene and I imagined myself standing on a white beach watching the approaching dhow.  I wanted to escape further and made two big paintings to immerse myself into that sunny paradise.  Sometimes when the sky is full of grey clouds I tell myself that a short distance beyond them is clear blue sky.  With a little imagination we can transport ourselves to other worlds and sunnier climes.

No 2: Moldova Playground:  At first glance we see a playground full of happy playful children.  Moldova is however one of Europe's poorest countries which depends for much of its survival on the money sent home by nationals working abroad.  The image upon which this painting is based informs us that the parents of virtually all the children are absent working in other countries.

No. 3: Road to Berlin:  Two worlds: Berlin, a street, people walk. Syria, a sniper’s alley, people run. Two sets of human beings. Berliners who stroll, safe. Syrians who flee, seeking to be safe. As we walk in our world, let us not forget their world.

No. 4: Escort to Safety:  Soldiers are not just about fighting. Every soldier has a mother who may need help.

No. 5:The Ethiopian in the Tuileries:  I came across a newspaper image of exotic Ethiopian street sweepers in Adis Ababa.  Having just returned from strolling through the Tuileries in Paris I decided to meld the two worlds into one.

No. 6: Barcelona Playground: In 2014 I was visiting Barcelona and went up to the Park Guell in the north of the city. High up in the park there was a view looking down onto a children's playground at playtime. It was a bright sunny day and the children were running, chatting, laughing and playing just as all children throughout the world should be able to do in safety and security. It was such a happy scene that I decided to make a series of paintings based on what I had seen and to celebrate that lovely day.
